Award-winning whip artist Gery L. Deer and his partner Scout, of Jamestown, Ohio, will be performing at the opening ceremonies of the Marcon science fiction convention at 8:30 p.m. on Friday May 23 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel downtown Columbus, Ohio. The couple will also be giving an exhibition lecture about the whip’s role in media and literature at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday May 25. Gery L. Deer is a professional whip artist and instructor and holds several whip speed and accuracy titles as well as pending world records in whip candle snuffing and whip targeting. He has been a performer, whip coach, or technical advisor to Wright State University, Ohio State University, Warner Brothers, NBC television, as well as Universal Studios. “Scifi cons are a perfect venue for our performance,” says Deer, who also happens to be a fan of science fiction. “The whip turns up in nearly every kind of literature and media from Zorro to Star Trek.” Deer performs with his wife and partner Barbara "Scout" Deer. The couple appeared on NBC’s America’s Got Talent in July of 2006 and have performed on other national television programs as well such as the WB Network's Steve Harvey's Big Time Challenge. They also perform annually at the Ohio State Fair and area comedy clubs and theatres. Deer is one of only three certified whip artistry instructors and performers by the Society of American Whip Artistry and managing director of GLD Enterprises' Whip Artistry Studio - the only permanent facility in the United States dedicated to the study of whip arts. The studio is the only facility of its kind that is a registered training center by the World Stunt Association. Marcon will run from Friday May 23 through Sunday May 25.
