6th Annual "Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase TM" Presented by GLD Enterprises & Productions and the *Ohio Western Arts Association. EXPANDED for 2008! July 24-27, 2008 (Thursday - Sunday) 9AM THURSDAY OPENING CEREMONIES (during Annie Oakley Days festival in Greenville, Ohio)
This is THE Wild West Arts event of 2008! Open to all western arts practitioners from whip artists to knife throwers. The Annual Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase began as a small gathering and has grown into one of the best western arts events in the United States.

Wild West arena arts include skills like lariat artistry, also known as ‘trick and fancy roping,’ precision knife and tomahawk throwing, western gun spinning, and precision whip artistry, or ‘whip cracking.’ Local western artists perform and teach throughout the year at schools, libraries, and historical events. When the national Wild West Arts Club dissolved in August of 2007, Ohio area members were determined to continue their regional convention. The event has run since 2003 during Annie Oakley Days at the Darke County Fairgrounds each July. Known as the ‘Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase,’ the convention and competition event has become a national attraction welcoming knife throwers, lariat artists, gun spinners, western musicians, and whip artists from all over the country. Participants attend workshops and contests and perform in several public shows. The event is open to public participation and each area is managed by nationally-recognized Wild West artists from here in the Miami Valley of Ohio. Doug Smith, of Medway, Ohio, is a world-champion lariat artist, performer, and instructor. Kirk Bass, of Xenia, is a champion thrown weapons competitor and certified instructor with the International Knife Throwers Hall of Fame, one of the participating specialist groups. Bass’s presentations include authentic Native American regalia to honor his family’s Cherokee heritage. The event is managed and sponsored by GLD Enterprises & Productions Entertainment and The Whip Artistry Studio based in Jamestown, Ohio. Gery L. Deer, the company’s managing director, is a professional whip artist, educational speaker, writer, and whip coach whose work has been featured on film and television. Each year Deer's company and his family donate manpower and resources to the Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase events. Deer said, “These professional performers are an invaluable cultural and entertainment resource and should be utilized more by performing arts groups and event promoters.” The 2008 Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase will be July 24-27 at the Darke County Fairgrounds with a special performance free to the public at 7:00 p.m. on Friday July 25 at the Garst Museum and Annie Oakley Center 205 North Broadway in Greenville. NEW!!! LET'S SEE WHAT YOU'VE GOT! Are you a variety show or western performer? Would you like to get a critique of your show? This is your year! GLD Enterprises & Productions is teaming up with local event coordinators to offer you the chance to get your show in front of a panel made up of people who hire entertainment as well as other experienced performers. Three professionals in the entertainment field will look at your show and give you a critique based on: Costuming, audience appeal, personal presentation, audience perception of skill, basic interest, and other areas. This isn't a 'contest,' and there's no reality show humiliation involved. When you're finished the panel will give you immediate feedback privately. This is a great way for new performers to test the waters and for more seasoned performers to try out something new! You must be a registered full access participant in the Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase to participate. Critique sessions will be scheduled throughout the weekend.

General Notices & Rules (No Exceptions): No controlled substances or alcoholic beverages are permitted on the grounds. *No firearms are to be discharged - blanks or otherwise. No smoking is permitted in any structure or tent-covered area.
No participants may use whips, guns, knives, or other 'weapons' outside the event area. Violation of any of these rules is grounds for ejection from the event without refund. *Note: The discharge of firearms without a permit on the fairgrounds is illegal.

Today, the skills and entertainment value of these performers is relegated to the rodeo arena or the sideshow. The Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase has provided a venue in Annie's home town of Greenville where western arts performers and hobbyists can come to hone their skills, compete in contests, and share their love of the western arts with friends and colleagues. Many western arts performers assist stage and film productions to act as stunt performers, stand-ins, and western arts coaches. In May 2006, Ohio WWAC members Doug Smith and Gery L. Deer served as western arts coaches for the Wright State University production of "Annie Get Your Gun." Smith and Deer helped the cast learn roping and gun spinning for the production which was the highlight of the university's theater season. The Annie Oakley Western Arts Showcase is now an integral part of the Annie Oakley Days festival. The AOWAS was the first to present it's entire program before a public audience .... the first to combine a western arts gathering with a hometown celebration of a Wild West Performing Artists' life and career ... and many more!
